Nicholas Roumel is a trial lawyer with over 25 years experience in federal and state courts, and various administrative tribunals. He focuses his practice on the following:
Employment and Civil Rights Law – Counsel and litigation in all areas of discrimination, retaliation, and wrongful discharge, with numerous successful litigation and settlement results against both public and private sector defendants. Also provides contract review, such as covenants not to compete, non-competition agreements, and severance packages. Nick is the co-chair of the Washtenaw County Labor & Employment Section, helping to educate fellow lawyers.
Labor Law - Representation of labor unions in arbitration, unfair labor practice litigation, and collective bargaining. Nick’s experience has ranged from being president of a UAW-affiliated local, to having been the other side of the bargaining table when he served on the Ann Arbor School Board from 1994-2000.
Education Law - With his experience on the Ann Arbor School Board, and in working for University of Michigan’s Student Legal Services for 14 years, Nick is uniquely suited to vigorously defend the rights of students, from K-12 to higher education, in suspension, expulsion, and students’ rights cases of all types.
Receivership – Nick successfully concluding multi-year appointment by the Washtenaw County court as “receiver” for a construction corporation, fulfilling federally funded contracts throughout the US, and can similarly assist with any business related litigation.
Criminal - Nick has successfully represented criminal defendants for over 20 years, including numerous high profile University of Michigan athletes, with an excellent record of obtaining favorable verdicts and dismissals. He is well prepared to assist in defending first offenders and college students, as well as with expungement petitions, employment applications, and all criminal record issues.
Victim Rights – Nick began his career at the Free Legal Aid Clinic in Detroit, helping victims of domestic violence. He currently represents victims of sexual assault and domestic violence in obtaining financial compensation.
Other Areas – Nick will also assist with entertainment law issues, with experience that includes successful litigation on behalf of a nationally recognized recording artist, to representation of the Original Ann Arbor Street Art Fair. Nick is also able to handle personal injury cases and business contract disputes of all types.
When he is not practicing law, Nick enjoys family time, running, and cooking, and writes a regular food and restaurant feature for Current magazine.
