A former employee of Pontiac-based United Wholesale Mortgage is suing the mortgage company, claiming that it cheated her and others out of overtime pay.
The lawsuit accuses UWM of routinely forcing some hourly employees to work beyond 40 hours a week, but then not paying them the overtime.
“They were trying to drive more work without having to pay the compensation,” Haberlein’s attorney, Noah Hurwitz of NachtLaw in Ann Arbor, said. “Whenever you work for the benefit of the company, that is called compensable time. And once you are above 40 hours, it always has to be time and a half.”
The lawsuit was filed Tuesday (July 27, 2021) in federal court in Detroit and seeks class-action status.
