Protection From Employer Wage Theft
The Fair Labor Standards Act protects employees from wage theft by their employers. Among other protections, it prohibits employers from charging "business costs" to their employees. One restaurant found a novel way to make employees pay for its business costs: it charged every employee a "breakage" fee to cover plates and glasses that may have been broken during a shift. Now the employer is going to trial to determine how much he's going to have to pay his employees for illegally taking money from them. Read more from The Post and Courier.
Driving While Black
Many white Americans have no idea what "driving while Black" means for so many Americans. The entire relationship with the police is a completely different experience for many law abiding Blacks than it is for whites. Does a Victim of Sexual Assault Have a Case For a Civil Lawsuit?
Sexual crimes are among some of the worst offenses in the criminal justice system. They can be violent and horrific, and the victim often has to live with the emotional and physical scars of the attack for the remainder of their life. While these types of tragedies certainly need to receive justice in a criminal court, the reality is that victims often cannot receive proper compensation unless they file suit in a civil court as well.
What Should A Powerful Woman Look Like?
In the law, we tend to find "reasonable" outcomes to be lawful. But what judges and juries see as reasonable is very much determined by what happens in our culture. In this thoughtful piece, a female member of the Kennedy clan suggests we need an American conversation about how our leaders who are women should present themselves. Obviously, with one of the two leading parties nominating a woman for President, it is time for us to imagine whether we expect women leaders to be different in any way from male leaders.
